Tiger’s Offseason Plans: Getting After It In The Gym

Tiger Woods’ first full year back from debilitating back issues has gone about as well as anyone, including Woods, could have hoped.

Despite not finding the winner’s circle, Woods has notched 11 top-25 finishes, including six top-10s and two runners-up. He also held or contended for the lead on the back nine at two of the year’s four major championships, and save for a few instances of routine stiffness, hasn’t had any physical setbacks to speak of.

So, following next week’s Tour Championship and the following week’s Ryder Cup, what is Tiger planning to do over the offseason?

Work on his driving, that despite coming together as of late, has left him 135th in driving accuracy; or get out on one of his three backyard practice greens to work on his putting that has seemingly deserted him when he needed it most?

No, he’s going to do what Tiger Woods does and hit the gym hard.

“I’m going to take a long break after the Ryder Cup and we’re going to evaluate things,” Woods said following the final round of the BMW Championship on Monday. “More importantly, I need to start really lifting and getting after it and getting stronger in certain areas because playing every single week seems like every single day is maintenance at this point, war of attrition.

“What you do in the offseason is what allows you to maintain it through the year especially on the backside of the year and I really didn’t train for all this because I didn’t know how much I was going to be playing. I was just trying to play.

“So, next year I have a better understanding of what I need to do and this offseason will be very different than it was last year.”
