Ugly 1999 Ryder Cup Shirt Sells For Nearly $4K

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. We’re yet to find a beholder who finds the beauty in the shirts won by the 1999 U.S. Ryder Cup team, but it appears that there’s at least one out there and they were willing to pay for it.

Known affectionately as “The Shirt,” the custom-designed Jeff Rose maroon shirt was littered with vintage Ryer Cup photos and brought to prominence thanks to the United States’ unlikely come-from-behind victory at the Country Club at Brookline.

So, what does a shirt so ugly that the players and caddies thought it was a joke when they originally saw it fetch at auction?

$3,906.00

An opening bid of $400 for the plastic-wrapped, never-worn shirt received 26 subsequent bids before the lot was closed on August 18, 2018.

One of only 99 U.S.-team issued shirts, the famed “Shirt” definitely has a home with someone who won’t be shy to put it on display.
