Wagner Nails Season-Saving Eagle At Wyndham

It’s better to be lucky rather than good, but Johnson Wagner was both on Friday as his weekend at the Wyndham Championship and his Tour card were on the line coming down the stretch.

Playing his first 53 holes in 2-under par, Wagner knew he needed a birdie on the par-4 18th to make the weekend. And coming into the week at 136th on the FedEx Cup point list, unless the Virginia Tech Hokie picked up some ground in the standings, he would be heading to the Web.com Tour finals to play for his job.

Facing 153 yards into the 18th green at Sedgefield Country Club, Wagner hit a nice walk-through short iron that never left the flagstick.

“I was just trying to hit something right at it,” Wagner said. “Came off the club and I started yelling at it to go in. Next thing we knew, we heard the stick get hit. Everybody went crazy up at the green. I started going crazy. It was a nice way to make the cut.”

He’ll still have some work to do on the weekend, likely needing something around a top-20 finish to jump from his current position at 136 into the top-125 for the first playoff event next week at The Northern Trust.
