The Odds: Rory McIlroy Favorite at Wells Fargo

The Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C., hosts the Wells Fargo Championship on the PGA Tour this week.

Rory McIlroy, the LVH SuperBook’s 8-to-1 favorite to win this weekend, returns to action for the first time since finishing eighth at the Masters a few weeks ago. He shot a 288 (even) at Augusta National and is the only member of this week’s field with odds below 10-to-1.

Phil Mickelson and Lee Westwood at 15-to-1, and Justin Rose at 18-to-1 project as McIlroy’s top competitors.

The Linemakers on Sporting News’ Brian Blessing, though, looks for some bigger prices.

“Rickie Fowler’s new swing is producing solid results, and he has fond memories at Quail Hollow. 25-to-1 is a great price!,” Blessing says.

“Webb Simpson in North Carolina is always an interesting option at 40-to-1,” he adds.

Fowler’s solid results that Blessing speaks of include sixth- and fifth-place finishes at the Shell Houston Open and Masters, respectively, while the fond memories are from Fowler’s first career PGA Tour win, at Quail Hollow in 2012.

Simpson, a Raleigh native, played his college golf at Wake Forest University, so this weekend will be a homecoming of sorts for him.
